Hero — companion animal and OlaAspen within a considered interior

Our World

A pet bed should never be something you have to hide.

02

IT STARTED WITH THEM.

OlaAspen didn't begin with a product. It began with four animals, each with very different needs.

My parents had two dogs of different ages, sizes and stages of life. As they grew older, those differences became harder to ignore.

One needed more support as age began to take its toll on the joints and spine. I watched the discomfort become real pain — the kind you could hear. The other moved through the world in a different body, at a different height, with different needs even in something as ordinary as eating from a bowl.

They made me question something I had somehow never stopped to question before:

If their bodies are different, why do we expect the same products to work for all of them?

THEN CAME SYDNEY & MELBOURNE.

Then came Sydney and Melbourne.

Sydney is small. Melbourne is anything but — a large-framed cat approaching eight kilograms, closer in scale to a small dog than what most pet products seem to imagine when they say “cat.”

Living with them turned an observation into something I encountered every day.

I bought beds. Scratching furniture. Toys. More beds.

Some they simply didn't want to use.

Some made me question whether enough thought had gone into how a cat would actually interact with them.

And some worked perfectly well — but I couldn't stand looking at them in my home.

I found myself facing the same compromise again and again:

Something they liked, but I wanted to hide.
Something I liked, but wasn't right for them.

Neither felt good enough.

WHY SHOULD WE HAVE TO CHOOSE?

The more I looked, the stranger the compromise seemed.

We think carefully about the objects we bring into our homes — the sofa we sit on, the chair we work from, the mattress we sleep on.

We consider comfort. Proportion. Materials. Durability. How something feels, how it functions, and how it belongs within a space.

Yet products made for the animals who share those same spaces are so often treated as something separate.

Functional or beautiful.
Comfortable or considered.
For them or for the home.

I didn't believe those choices should be necessary.

That became the starting point for OlaAspen.

05

DIFFERENT BODIES. DIFFERENT NEEDS.

There is no single way to be a pet.

Age changes the body. Size changes the way an animal interacts with an object. Weight, mobility, sleeping position and behaviour all shape what comfort means to an individual animal.

What began with the animals in our own lives led us to look further.

We spent time listening to pet owners — how their animals sleep, what they struggle with, what they repeatedly buy, what gets abandoned, and what they wish had been designed differently.

We also spoke with veterinary professionals in Australia, asking questions and learning more about how age, body size, mobility and everyday behaviour can shape an animal's needs.

The more we listened, the clearer one thing became: there is no universal definition of comfort.

That is why OlaAspen begins with observation rather than assumption.

We look at how companion animals curl, stretch, lean and rest. How their bodies are supported. How they enter and leave a bed. How materials respond beneath them over time.

Our approach to orthopaedic support grows from that principle:

Design for the body using it — not simply the category printed on the label.

AND THEN, THE HOME.

Kinley Tian / interior design / architectural environment

There was another perspective shaping OlaAspen from the beginning.

Award-winning interior designer Kinley Tian had spent years working with highly considered residential spaces across different markets.

Through that work, the same tension appeared from another direction.

A room could be resolved down to its materials, proportions, furniture and light — and then a pet product would arrive that seemed to belong to an entirely different visual world.

Together, we began asking a different question:

What if pet products were considered with the same discipline as the rest of the home?

Not disguised as furniture.

Not designed for appearance at the expense of the animal.

Simply given the same attention to form, proportion, material, function and longevity.

ASPEN LU — FOUNDER

EXPERIENCE BECAME A BRAND.

Aspen Lu — founder / product development / materials / design review

For founder Aspen Lu, OlaAspen is not a first encounter with building products or brands.

Over more than a decade, Aspen has worked across product development, brand building and international e-commerce — experience that shaped an understanding of what happens between an idea and a product people ultimately choose to bring into their lives.

Years spent around luxury and design-led businesses shaped another understanding:

Value is rarely created by one feature alone.

It emerges when product, material, experience, identity and detail all speak the same language.

OlaAspen brings that thinking into a category Aspen believed deserved more consideration.

Not to create another pet product.

But to question what the standard for one should be.

08

MATERIALS ARE PART OF THE EXPERIENCE.

Material detail — upholstery / textile
Construction detail — foam / internal structure
Product detail — stitching / zip / handle / construction

A material is never just a surface.

It changes how something feels. How it performs. How it ages. How it is cared for. And ultimately, how it lives within a home.

That is why material and construction decisions at OlaAspen are considered as part of the product itself — not simply as finishing choices.

We think about touch, structure, maintenance, durability and the way individual components can be cared for or replaced over time.

Because good design should continue to make sense after the first impression.

09

NO COMPROMISE.

What they need.
And how you want to live.

OlaAspen exists between two worlds that should never have been separate.

Support without sacrificing form.

Materials considered for use as much as appearance.

Products designed for the animal — and considered in relation to the room around them.

Because caring for them shouldn't mean compromising the home you have created.

And caring about your home should never mean asking them to compromise either.
